So, you finally got that call that you’ve got your first teaching job, but have no idea where to start??
- How do you actually set up a classroom to maximize student success?
- How do you create a classroom climate of mutual respect that your students will thrive in?
- How do you write report cards? Create newsletters? Create a classroom management plan that works??
- How do you actually create a worthwhile unit (and not waste days of your time doing it!)?
- How do you create a healthy work-life balance, while handling all of the new responsibilities that you have, to avoid burnout?
Believe me… I had all these questions and more when I first started out too.
Luckily, with the help of fellow family and friends who also teach, I was able to overcome these challenges and have learned tons along the way!
Alright. Quick story time.
Raise your hand if this sounds anything like you’re going through….
I can still remember it like yesterday- getting the call from our Human Resources department that I had just been hired for my first teaching job… starting Tuesday!!
Emotions flooded over me, after 10 or 12 interviews and no calls, I finally had something lined up for the year! It was a Grade 4/5 split that was starting in October with some late funding. They would be pulling kids from 4 other classrooms to join my class, but I would be the only classroom that was multi-level.
So my first year would be flying solo, with no teaching partner. Ok, a little bit of panic…. But I can do this.
It was a Friday afternoon that I got the call, and my students would start in our new classroom on Tuesday. So I had 4 days to transform a classroom and plan for a year. Panicking a little more now…
As I sat down with plans to get to work, I realized that I actually had no idea where to start. How did I just finish my Education degree, yet feel at such a loss now that I had actually landed a job??
Lucky for me, I’m one of 4 sisters. One of which had been teaching for about 10 years already, whew!!
I remember her words of wisdom after I called her crying in a panic the first night…
"Take it one day at a time, keep the kids safe and happy, and the rest will fall into place".
In the moment, it’s what I needed to hear. She gave me everything I needed to whip up a classroom overnight- bulletin displays, books, extra shelves and drawers- and by Monday my room looked great and like it was ready for the kids.
She also gave me her first day plans as a jumping off point, and some booklets to have the students work on while I got used to what it felt like to have 23 students under my care and control.
I was still very much in panic mode,
Feeling extremely overwhelmed, I sat down to create my first week of plans- and had NO idea where to even start.
Should I get right in to our first science unit?
What are the kids going to do when they walk in?
How do I get their attention?
What if no one listens to me?
What if my principal walks in and no one is doing as they’re supposed to??
And where do I get all of the work for my students to do anyway? Do I really create it all from scratch??
And the questions didn’t end in that first week…..
Flash forward to the first time a parent asked what my home communication plan was, where our calendar or website could be found, what our year plan would look like, or any of the other questions that I had no idea would be coming my way.
Oh. And then report cards came around.
So after barely getting my feet wet with what school days would look like in my classroom, I had to write 23 sets of report cards without the foggiest idea of where to start, what to report on, or what kind of language to use.
To say I started off my year panicking would be the understatement of the century!
All the extra work hours in the world weren’t helping me feel better at my job, it only made me feel tired and overwhelmed on top of unprepared.
How is it that I felt so successful in university, only to feel like I didn’t have the first idea of how to actually teach when I finally got the job?? And was I the only rookie teacher feeling this way?
So what’s this product all about anyway??

Hi there, I'm Micki!
I am a Grade 4 teacher in Brandon, Manitoba and I’m currently taking my Masters in Counseling. I’ve been teaching since 2014 and while I won’t even pretend to know it all, I have learned that connections, relationships, and a focus on our well-being are the building blocks to a successful teaching career.
I believe that taking the time to care for ourselves and understanding the importance of a positive, mindful mindset is our best chance to ensure our happiness both in and out of the classroom.
I hit the jackpot when I found this guy who keeps me on track with these values every single day! I feel super grateful to be able to share my days with Shaun, his three little ones and the rest of his amazing family!
What is the course delivery method?
The best part of this course is that it’s self-led, meaning you can take it completely at your own pace!

Where applicable, templates and suggested resources save you even more time as you check off those lengthy to-do lists!

What format is it in? Video? Written?
Most lessons have a written summary of the information as well as a video to explain the material in more depth. Some shorter lessons only have written summaries so you can get the most out of this course in the least amount of time!
Many lessons also come with templates or additional resources that I’ve shared, most of which are in Microsoft Word.
Is it a one-time fee, or are there any hidden fees?
You will only have to pay a one-time fee to access all course materials and templates.
Occasionally, I refer to some solid TeachersPayTeachers accounts for you to look into, but those are completely optional and in addition to the course content.
Who is this product designed for?
I created this product with newer teachers in mind, most likely teachers in their first 1-5 years.
I do, however, believe that as teachers we can always learn from each other. With that in mind, I think that there are some ideas throughout this course that would benefit any teacher, regardless of their years of experience!
How long will the course take me?
There is just over 2 hours of video included in the course, if you were to watch from start to finish.
Each module, however, gives you ideas of where to begin to plan certain aspects of teaching, so I think you will find that you will finish the course over a few days as you’ll want to use the ideas to plan for your students and classroom!
